Aug. 20, 2015 (Houston, TX) – The Woodlands Wildcats will join the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) for the 2016 season, Wildcats president Nat Latman announced today.  The Wildcats will join teams like the Houston Energy, Austin Yellow Jackets, and San Antonio Regulators in the IWFL’s Southwest Division.

Founded in 2000, the IWFL is the longest-running women’s football league in the United States.  “The IWFL has been promoting women’s full-tackle football for over 15 years,” Latman said.  Laura Cantu, the Wildcats’ head coach and vice president of football operations, also voiced her support for the move.  “I could not be happier to be in the IWFL,” Cantu declared.  “This is my family. I am so happy to be staying home.”

“We are excited to welcome the Wildcats to the league,” stated IWFL Chief Operating Officer Kezia Disney.  “They will be a great addition to the schedule and should make for some exciting new rivalries in the Southwest division.”

Latman also reiterated his intention to make the Woodlands Wildcats the first team where players are not required to pay in order to play for the team.  The Wildcats will hold their first tryout on October 10 at 6 PM at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Shenandoah, and it will be a free tryout for all interested female athletes.

“We want to revolutionize women’s football,” Latman announced.  “These athletes already train three times a week for three months and play eight to ten games a season, making tremendous sacrifices and putting their bodies at risk for injury.  We don’t believe that they should have to pay $1,000 on top of that for a player fee.  On the Wildcats, we want all women who love to play, not just those who can afford to pay to play.”
