IWFL AND USA FOOTBALL PARTNER TO STRENGHEN AMERICA’S FAVORITE SPORT

Austin, TexasThe Independent Women's Football League (IWFL) and USA Football, the sport’s national governing body on youth and amateur levels, have forged a partnership to further promote the sport and its immense popularity among female athletes.

All USA Football women’s national teams for International Federation of American Football (IFAF) women’s competitions will comprise entirely of IWFL athletes.  In addition, the IWFL has named USA Football as the league’s Official Education Partner and will provide USA Football membership to all IWFL coaches and officials.  USA Football conducts more than 100 training events annually on youth and amateur levels.  In the past two years, USA Football has helped train more than 16,000 football coaches in all 50 states.

This football partnership also will further strengthen girls’ participation in America’s favorite sport.  The IWFL will establish an “IWFL ‘J’ League” in the coming year.  This all-girls youth league will offer more youngsters the opportunity to further their participation in America’s favorite sport within the IWFL’s 44 markets in the United States and Canada.

More than 450 American high schools offer girls-specific football programs, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).  This figure represents the greatest number of girls-specific high school football programs in history.

“This is a very exciting partnership for us,” said Laurie Frederick, IWFL Chief Executive Officer. “USA Football has made great progress in the standardization of youth football. They have represented the USA well as a member of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). This partnership is just one more step towards the same standardization of girls and women’s football. We look forward to developing stable programs with USA Football well into the future.”

“We’re extremely pleased and proud to partner with the IWFL,” said USA Football Executive Director Scott Hallenbeck. “Football’s appeal is universal. Its values and excitement resonates with women and men, boys and girls. We look forward to a strong relationship with the IWFL for the betterment of the sport and our U.S. women’s national team program.”

She's just 'Coach'

Kiana Dennis worked hard to earn the respect of Pershing's running backs. Sure, she's a woman, but to them ...

BY MICK McCABE • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

A Detroit Pershing running back slips through the wrong hole for the umpteenth time, and head coach Ken Fenton grows more frustrated with each repeated mistake.
"Coach, show them how it's done," Fenton says to his running backs coach.
The coach jumps into the huddle, takes a handoff, sprints through the correct hole and heads to daylight.
"She can go," said junior running back Darryl Gray.
She?!
Kiana Dennis is the petite, 5-foot-3 running backs coach at Pershing, which plays at Cass Tech today. She has helped the Doughboys' running backs learn how to become better football players and maybe a whole lot more.

Team USA Represents Nation And IWFL At World Cup

The clock finally struck midnight on Team USA's chances for bringing home a medal. USA lost to Canada in the first round of the playoffs 15-6 and then lost on a last minute touchdown to France in the Bronze medal game, 18-13. Both times the USA fought to the bitter end. Against France the potential winning touchdown reception was batted away as time ran out. Team USA alias the New York Sharks finished the tournament 5-3 and in fourth place.
Team USA was picked to finish last, but had the best record in the round robin portion of the tournament. Four times USA had to come from behind to win games, including 3 of them with less than 2 minutes left. Adrienne Smith was named to the tournament's defensive all-star team. Women a Significant Part of Football's Family Portrait
By Matt Molina, USA Football
It’s a common stereotype that while men are watching football on TV, women are in a separate room watching something like Simon Cowell from American Idol making some poor kid cry.  A common notion is that women would rather dissect an actress’ wardrobe on Oscar night than break down a well-executed screen pass.

However, the growing popularity of football isn’t solely attributed to men; women are a significant part of the game.  In fact, in 2008, the number of women who tuned in to watch the New York Giants win Super Bowl XLII doubled the number watching the Academy Awards three weeks later.
